western11Ngoonbi Maintenance Crew Hosted WfD Activity – Seven Now Employed

Shortly after the 2016 New Year, Jobfind collaborated with Ngoonbi to establish a much needed activity that focused on training and preparing participants for upcoming employment opportunities within Ngoonbi’s organisation. These employment opportunities were in the Construction and Housing Maintenance sector. Interested participants were invited to attend an information session to discuss future employment prospects, and from there; nine willing participants were chosen to commence into the Ngoonbi Maintenance Crew WfD Activity in Mid-February.

Each of the nine participants learnt over a six month period how to fully maintain each of the 28 Ngoonbi houses. This included mowing, trimming, whipper snipping, house painting indoors and outside, and other general home maintenance duties required including plumbing. Construction tutoring and additional ticketing in First Aid, White Card, and LL&N mentoring was delivered through Skill360.
One of the crew’s greatest achievements is the newly constructed Ngoonbi office (formally the Kuranda Jobfind office). Participants successfully turned a simple four walled office area into a modern facility featuring a reception area, separate offices, waiting room, boardroom and mini kitchen.

As the activity drew to a close, seven out of the nine participants successfully gained permanent part time employment as maintenance officers with Ngoonbi Construction. These positions will lead into fulltime roles after 13 weeks as Ngoonbi Construction commences their building project; forecast to construct ten new residential homes in surrounding Communities. Six of the participants identify as indigenous and one who is mature aged and is eligible for Restart.

Ngoonbi hosted a graduation BBQ for the seven new employees, Jobfind along with Skill360 and Mitre 10 shared the celebrations and commended their achievements. Each of the participants said they felt supported by all who were involved and are proud to be working as part of their community.
