In My Shoes 2017

Australian business puts shoe on the other foot

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to live in someone else’s shoes? Eddie Goncalves got the chance to run the company for a day as Jobfind Centre Australia celebrated its In Your Shoes Campaign to mark International Day of People with a Disability (IDPWD) on Sunday December 3.

Jobfind Centre Australia rallied its community – and engaged key staff to make the role swap and perform another person’s job for a day with Jobfind and Angus Knight CEO Michael Hobday trading places with Regional Employer Engagement Consultant Eddie Goncalves.

“Everyone experiences daily challenges in their working life, but for a person with a disability these challenges can be exacerbated,” Mr Hobday said.  “By asking managers – including me – to walk a mile in another person’s shoes, Jobfind Centre Australia hopes to promote further discussion around the challenges experienced by people with a disability in the workplace, and help promote a fairer work environment for all.”

My Hobday said the traditional notion that a disability was inherently negative couldn’t be more wrong, and he’s intent on proving to Australians that in many cases a disability can actually be an advantage in a work environment.

“In My Shoes teaches people, not only how disability can affect daily work challenges, but provides opportunities for employees to experience the challenge and pressure that a manager may experience in their role. As a result, we can create workplaces with greater understanding, respect and inclusive practice”.

Eddie Goncalves was thrown in the deep end “I lead two meetings and was briefed on Angus Knight and Jobfind’s strategy for growth which was really interesting, I didn’t realise the extent of our plans outside of Disability Employment Services. I had a wonderful time and really enjoyed having a PA.”

IDPWD is a United Nations sanctioned day held on 3 December each year. The international celebration aims to increase public awareness, understanding and acceptance of people with a disability and celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with a disability.

In My Shoes was conducted on Friday, 1st December 2017 to further support his cause and raise awareness about disabilities in the Australian workforce. To find out more information, please visit inmyshoes.jobfindcentre.com.au.
