29 January 2010 – 15 Illawarra youths are taking part in an innovative training and mentoring program equipping them for secure long term employment.

Jobfind Centres Australia has registered 15 people for Youth Highways– an innovative and engaging training program tailored to youth in the Illawarra. Funded by the Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), participants are completing a Statement of Attainment in Construction while also taking part in fitness, cooking, nutrition, budgeting and mentoring courses, supported by Clinical Psychologist Trystan Warren of Future Cognition.

Last week Youth Highways participants received a visit from Melbourne Cup winning jockey Corey Brown who spoke about goals and overcoming personal barriers. Brown also passed around his Melbourne Cup trophy while fielding questions from the excited participants.

“Youth Highways is equipping Illawarra’s young people with the skills they need for lifelong employment”, explained Tanya McCallum, Centre Manager of Jobfind Wollongong. “Our aim is for each participant to achieve sustainable employment and contribute to the Illawarra community.”

Jobfind is arranging work experience placements at the conclusion of the 10 week program to help participants prepare for working life.

Jobfind provides training and employment opportunities to recently and long term unemployed people in Wollongong, Dapto and Berkeley.
