Jobfind opens its doors for local job seekers and employers.

20 October 2009 – Unemployed job seekers have completed an innovative and practical hospitality training course that has secured them jobs and work experience in an industry that provides them with a future..

Jobfind Cairns is taking an innovative approach to getting Cairn’s long term unemployed into work. Job seekers undertook a practical hospitality training course, delivered by Jobfind and the National Institute of Training, on-site at the Cairns Colonial Club Resort. At the conclusion of the three week course, which involved both practical and theory elements, the participants were introduced to local employers through “speed interviewing”, which also involved participants demonstrating their skills through serving the employers lunch. Through this process, nearly half of the participants have already secured jobs in hospitality.

Job seekers will be receiving their qualifications at a graduation ceremony on 23 October 2009.

“These job seekers have been affected by the recession and lack of jobs”, explained Simon Rodgers, North Queensland Regional Manager. “So Jobfind looked at which industries could offer long-term employment opportunities and designed a training course that would allow participants to get a taste of the job.”

Many of the job seekers had previously been trades assistants and labourers and had not considered a career in hospitality. Three of the participants, who are from Yarrabah, a local Indigenous community, were accommodated at the resort, so travel did not hinder their learning opportunities.

“The great thing about this course is that it offers employment prospects to people who do not usually have access to this sort of training”, said Simon. “This is not just training, we offer graduates solid employment opportunities through the “speed interview” process and ongoing support. The proof is in the pudding with nearly half of all participants already placed into work”.

At the graduation, participants will receive their Certificate 2 in Hospitality (Food and Beverage), Certificate 2 in Hospitality (Front Office) and certificates of attainment.
