Creating more jobs for remote Australia

Darwin, September 2 2003 - A specially tailored program that caters for remote communities by focusing on enterprise development and job creation will give Indigenous communities in the Northern Territory's Top End a much needed boost in employment opportunities.

As part of the Government's $2.5 billion employment services revamp, Jobfind Centres has been selected to provide special employment services to job seekers in remote areas of Australia, in addition to its services based around metropolitan and regional districts.

According to chief executive officer of Jobfind Centres Mr Con James Kittos, assistance to remote areas and Indigenous communities will differ significantly from suburban Centres because job seekers living in the Top End have unique needs.

"Communities in the Top End can be hundreds of kilometres away from the usual types of employment so we need to focus on bringing jobs to them. We will be identifying, creating and co-ordinating job opportunities in the local area, then helping people from all over the community take advantage of them", said Mr Kittos.

"Our ultimate goal is to stimulate the labour market through local enterprise development in industries like mining, railway, gas and pearling, as well as land management and ranger programs to promote a healthier economy in the Top End".

In the often remote communities of Northern Territory, Jobfind will keep in close communication with locals to ensure they deliver the right services for each situation.

"This is isn't just about training and helping individuals, it's about bringing jobs to the wider community. However, our work will remain individually tailored, flexible and most importantly, be delivered by the staff face-to-face", said Mr Kittos.

Jobfind will be working with the Northern Land Council to provide a culturally sensitive solution for Indigenous job seekers in the Top End, complementing their current efforts to raise participation rates for training and employment outcomes among Indigenous people.
