Locals recognised for achievements

Napranum, 19 September 2002 - With 2002 labelled as “The Year of the Outback”, it is encouraging to learn that Napranum resident Gregory Coconut and the Napranum Knights Rugby team are having a year to remember, with a little help from their friends at Jobfind Australia.

Presentations were recently held at the Uniting Church at Napranum to recognise their achievements - Gregory on the work front and the Knights on the sporting field.

Jobfind was there along with Vance Wallin representing the Cape Projects Group (CPG) and many other supporters to congratulate them on a job well done. Napranum Elders and Justice Group members attending were Marianne Coconut, Thelma Coconut, Aileen Motton, Thanicoupe and Reverend Saimone Davui.

Gregory clocked up a four months’ service as a horticulture trainee with CPG in Weipa, an arrangement made possible through a joint commitment from CPG and Jobfind to indigenous employment in the area.

“Gregory has shown a keen interest in his work and he is continuing to make good progress,” said Maggy Macpherson, Jobfind’s Regional Manager for Queensland, when presenting Gregory with a $50 gift voucher and a large hamper to mark his milestone.

Marianne Coconut thanked Jobfind for the support offered to Gregory, George Dick (another trainee attending the presentation to Gregory who himself will celebrate three months traineeship with Comalco in October) and for the commitment demonstrated by both Jobfind and CPG to supporting the people in the cape area.

The Napranum Knights Rugby team won their grand final 26-14 at Weipa on Saturday 14 September, after being presented with their striking bright red and blue brand new jerseys by Jobfind only two days earlier at the Uniting Church function. Congratulations to the Knights!

At the presentation of the jerseys, Reverend Davui thanked Jobfind for their sponsorship and spoke about the role of original captain-coach Bobby Adidi and the Knights’ great success on the field in the 2002 season.

“Winners are grinners” so it’s no surprise that the locals were all smiles and looking good at their presentations.

Jobfind’s Maggy Macpherson and her Cairns Branch Manager Sue Turner, involved in both presentations, pledged their ongoing support and involvement of their staff in Weipa, Napranum and Aurukun; which is good news for the area and for job seekers.
